42nd Street is an innovative Greater Manchester young people’s mental health charity providing free and confidential services to young people who are experiencing difficulties with their mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Place 2 Be
Place2Be is a children’s mental health charity that provides counselling and mental health support and training in UK schools. They have a dedicated area on their site with information on:

Emotion coaching UK
In the current climate it is important to acknowledge how emotions affect our stress response system and impact on our physiological and mental wellbeing. Based on research by American Psychologist John Gottman, Emotion Coaching uses moments of heightened emotion and resulting behaviour to guide and teach the child and young person about more effective responses. Through empathetic engagement the child’s emotional state is verbally acknowledged and validated, promoting a sense of security and feeling ‘felt’. If you have already been trained as a professional in this approach you can find resources for professionals on the website. Information for parents/carers is also available.

The BFET Educational Psychology and Specialist Outreach (EPSO) team have compiled a range of links and resources that may be helpful in supporting children, young people, their families and school staff.
General information, links and resources
The British Psychological Society have collated a range of resources and articles, including ‘talking to children about Coronavirus’, ‘parenting while self-isolating and social distancing’ and ‘teacher resilience during coronavirus school closures’. There is also support and advice around the UK schools closures and links to a range of external resources, including guidelines from the UK government, the NHS, public Health England and WHO.
Southend Educational Psychology Service (EPS) have collated an extensive range of links and resources, including information on talking to children and young people about Coronavirus, information about emotional wellbeing and mental health, activities for teaching staff and other professionals and activities for families to enjoy at home.
Resources for understanding and managing responses to coronavirus
Russ Harris (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) trainer) has developed a video and eBook on how to respond effectively to the Coronavirus pandemic, using principles of ACT . He calls the response ‘FACE COVID’. Russ will also be launching webinars from 28th April – https://www.actmindfully.com.au/
Mark Adams (Educational and Coaching Psychologist) from Adams Psychology Services has developed some psychology-informed resource packs to support coping, resilience and wellbeing in volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous times
Maintaining Wellbeing During Coronavirus is a short, practical 5-page document that can help families plan to maintain their wellbeing during self-isolation, quarantine or lockdown. It is informed by positive psychology, particularly Martin Seligman’s PERMA model of wellbeing (Seligman, 2011) –
Mental health and emotional wellbeing
Young Minds have written a blog called ‘what to do if you’re anxious about coronavirus’. It is accessible to a range of readers but particularly relevant to young people who are secondary and post-16. It includes links to a range of helpline services. advice and links for young people.
Support for families
Zero to Three have an excellent range of resources for families with young children and toddlers. The resources include age-appropriate responses to common questions, a guide to self-care, and activities for young children experiencing social distancing.
The Special Needs Jungle website has compiled a range of resources that will be helpful for supporting children and young people with SEND. The page also contains a range of links to activities, resources and ideas relating to a range of topics including wellbeing, self-regulation, exercise, sensory and formal learning.
Wiltshire council have shared an excellent parent pack called ‘looking after yourself, looking after your children’.
Talking to children and young people about the coronavirus
Manuela Molina (Mindheart) has produced this excellent workbook which will help you to explain and explore coronavirus with primary-aged children. It is available in a range of languages here.
Siobhan Currie (Senior EP, BPS) has shared how to respond to the coronavirus if it impacts on your family.
Supporting people with autism and other social communication difficulties
Amanda McGuiness (‘Little Puddins’ / the autism educator) has created a very accessible social story called ‘what is the coronavirus’.
Carol Gray has created a more detailed social story to help explain Coronavirus to young people with autism.

Supporting students in key transition years
Educational Psychology Reach Out
Educational Psychology Reach Out is a new online space where educational psychologists from across the country will share resources in response to the Coronavirus pandemic, initially set up by Southend Educational Psychology Service.
A live stream webinar take place at 8am every morning with 20 minutes from an expert and 10 minutes for a Q&A. The session will be recorded and hosted on You Tube. These sessions aim to provide information for educational psychologists, school staff, parents, carers,children, young people and professionals.
Starline, a new national helpline was launched today to support parents to home school children
StarLine was set up by the Confederation of School Trusts (CST), several other Educational Trusts, Mumsnet and other partners and is supported by the Department for Education. StarLine will offer free, confidential and personalised advice and support from qualified teachers and educational experts on a range of issues including how to support children’s mental health and wellbeing, Special Education Needs queries and support with the curriculum.
Department for Education announce £12 million package of support for vulnerable children
Today, DfE announced a multi-million package of support for children who face increased risks as they stay at home during the Coronavirus outbreak. This includes money for projects which support children’s mental health and to provide practical and emotional help.

Council for Disabled Children publish guidance on wellbeing and Covid-19 with a focus on Learning Disability and Autism
The Council for Disabled Children (CDC) have produced a document which brings together advice from the government and NHS and asks ‘What does this mean for me and my family’, with a specific focus on children and young people with learning disabilities and/or autism. It can be found here
