Developing the Role of Teaching Assistants working with EAL students

This course aims to arm TAs with a range of effective ideas and strategies for supporting children with EAL. It will consider language acquisition, the importance of vocabulary and its impact on comprehension/reading and effective methods of integration for new arrivals. It will look at what makes an effective intervention plus general dos and dont’s when working with EAL learners. 

 

This course aims to: 

  • Look at effective integration strategies for EAL learners, especially INAs 
  • Consider how language is learnt, stages of learning English and normal time frames 
  • Examine common barriers to learning including cultural differences 
  • Find out what an effective intervention looks like and how to make the most of the time with EAL children 
  • Think about do’s and don’ts associated with working with EAL learners
