EAL and SEN – Considering Differences and Similarities

This session aims to examine the area of EAL and SEN. It will look at definitions of both and further examine how many features of EAL can be confused with features of SEN. This session will look at methods to distinguish between the two areas and the next steps for a range of real life case studies including for children with both EAL and SEN.


This course aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the differences between EAL and SEN
  • Consider how strategies differ for each area
  • Look at ways of identifying features of EAL, which might look like SEN
  • Consider real life case studies to assist with identification and next steps
  • Examine ‘red flags’ to look out for when working with EAL children
  • Look at effective ways to gather further background information on EAL learners and why it is important
  • Look at how common assessments are not always effective for EAL students
