Using Film, Image and Picture Books with EAL Learners

This course will look at effective and exciting ways to build film, images and picture books in to your teaching. From pre-teaching and filling in experience gaps to building on prior knowledge this session will provide practical, hands-on and visual strategies that are appealing and effective for children learning English (or any children with poor vocabulary).


This course aims to:

  • Find effective ways to build film in to lessons as a means of pre-teaching, setting the scene and assessing prior knowledge
  • Show a wide range of high quality picture books that can be used to support topic work and language development plus strategies and ideas for how to use them
  • Look at a wide range of sources for images and pictures that can help bridge experience gaps, build on prior learning and pre teach children, as well as lots of practical strategies and ideas for using them
  • Look at effective ICT strategies that involve using film and images



Audience  :  Primary school EAL leads, classroom teachers, RQTs, NQTs, trainees, TAs, SLT – it is also

suitable for Secondary English leads and classroom teachers
