Working with International New Arrivals

All EAL pupils deserve to feel safe, secure and happy in school. This course will explore the wide range of needs that INAs face and the school’s role in identifying and supporting their needs. It will incorporate pre-arrival preparation, integration, working with parents, assessment, grouping, effective interventions and common barriers to learning.


This course aims to:

  • Raise awareness of the diverse needs of INA students
  • Look at ways to gather background information and use it to inform future teaching
  • Consider how to provide a safe and welcoming learning environment
  • Examine a range of resources and strategies that might be useful to your school
  • Reflect on the diversity and inclusiveness of your curriculum, books, and resources; and consider ways to make them more inclusive if needed
  • Develop an understanding of language acquisition
  • Consider ways to overcome a range of common barriers to learning
