Lesson Study Events with Professor Akihiko Takahashi
A unique opportunity to learn from lesson study and mathematics expert, Professor Akihiko Takahashi
Two exciting lesson study events in December to explore the Japanese approach to problem solving in mathematics, lesson study as a tool to improve teaching and learning, and the role of the Koshi.

Japanese problem solving in maths: enhancing teaching and learning through lesson study – Monday 4 December
This event will explore Japanese problem solving and how lesson study shapes teacher professional development in mathematics. Professor Takahashi will outline the Japanese approach to teaching mathematics and give an overview of lesson study as a professional development approach. Participants will have opportunities to engage in formal post-lesson discussion focusing on Japanese mathematics and problem solving. Discussion will be informed by video of Professor Takahashi teaching groups of English speaking pupils. He will also present a model for managing lesson study at whole school level. Participants may find the day particularly valuable if they are able to work with a colleague(s) from their school.

Exploring the role of the Koshi in lesson study – Tuesday 5 December
This event is for experienced lesson study practitioners and those with mathematical expertise to explore the role of the Koshi in Japanese lesson study and to develop the skills to support lesson study in a commentator/facilitator role. Participants will observe a live research lesson and experience the possible approach a Koshi might take.
This event is targeted at mathematics leaders, lead teachers, SLEs, consultants, advisers and academics.
