Programme structure

This course runs over 5 days from January to December 2017. The course leaders are a team of tutors including Sue Hough, Simon Mazunder, Nicola Smith and David Swanson.

Course aims

The core aims of the programme are to:

  • Enable teachers to develop a new approach to teaching GCSE resit, based on Realistic Maths Education, which can help students gain ownership of methods rather than having to rely on memory.
  • Facilitate a lesson study approach to teachers working in pairs within their colleges in order to develop their teaching

What does it involve?

This course builds on research funded by The Nuffield Foundation into how the RME approach developed in The Netherlands can be used to enhance achievement and engagement for this group of students. Participants will work on the associated material and consider both the underlying theory and the practicalities of using this approach with GCSE resit students. This course requires two participants from each Institution, so that teachers can use a lesson study approach to developing their teaching. Between training days teachers will be required to teach some of the lesson material, to observe each other teaching and to feedback and review this experience at the next training day. This model of training has proved to be very successful as a way of helping teachers make lasting long-term impact on the way they teach.
