Teaching GCSE Maths (TGM)

Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) is a membership organisation and a charity which since the 1960s has worked to support mathematics teaching and learning. The NW1 Maths Hub are pleased to announce that MEI are running a year long course focusing on mathematics subject knowledge and classroom practice to enable non-specialists to teach KS4 mathematics effectively.

Training Dates and Times (2017/2018)


  • Days 1 and 2: Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 November 2017
  • Days 3 and 4: Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 February 2018
  • MEI Conference day 1: Thursday 28 June 2018

Times: 9.00am for a 9.30am start and a 3.00pm finish
Venue: Connell Sixth Form College

Programme structure

A year-long course focusing on developing mathematics subject knowledge and effective classroom practice for those new to teaching secondary mathematics.

The course includes:

  •  Four study days spread across the academic year where participants learn about effective     mathematics teaching together
  •  Packages of live online sessions with an expert tutor exploring aspects of mathematics teaching
  •  Self-paced online learning to develop subject knowledge
  •  Exclusive access to a collection of high quality supporting resources for the classroom
  •  Entry to day 1 of the MEI Conference in 2018

Course aims

  •  Reflect upon creating effective and engaging environments for learning maths
  •  Learn more about the principles of effective pedagogy in maths teaching
  •  Apply these principles in the classroom with practical strategies and resources
  •  Gain confidence and competence with the subject content of KS4 maths up to, and including, higher tier GCSE
