Lesson Study

In 2012 the school led a TDA project that involved secondary mathematics colleagues from the Alliance for learning, secondary mathematics colleagues from University partnership schools and colleagues from the University of Manchester. This project used lesson study as a form of research and CPD to enhance dialogue and questioning in the mathematics classroom. To find out more about lesson study, click here.

Some of the benefits were

  • “Other members of the department were involved in the delivery process as well as people from outside the school – this collaboration allowed the exploration of ideas and processes.”
  • “Running a lesson study allowed me to see how much this kind of activity benefits the pupils, therefore the dialogue and questioning techniques are something that I will focus on in planning lessons.”
  • “The chance to step out of my comfort zone and have whole class discussion for the entire lesson.”
  • “A chance to explore new teaching methods. An opportunity to see how pupils reacted to this kind of teaching. Evaluation with colleagues.”

Through this project, colleagues were challenged, motivated and inspired to read and reflect on research, try something different in their classrooms, collaborate with others and reflect on the process.

The success of this project is seen through other departments and colleagues at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls using lesson study and schools within the original project continuing to use it as a form of CPD.
