Why train to teach at Culcheth Campus

Culcheth High School is an innovative and forward-thinking school, built in 2010, that puts professional development at the heart of everything that we do in our school community. We believe that investing in our staff directly benefits each and every one of our students. We also believe that investing in the next generation of teachers is crucial to our success and is key to serving our local community.

We are incredibly excited to be taking on the challenge of being a Lead School for Schools Direct which will provide us with the opportunity to offer you a unique evidence-based approach to teacher training. Working in partnership with the Alliance for Learning and the prestigious University of Manchester means that you will receive a broad and balanced training experience, collaborating with a team of highly experienced, passionate and dedicated teachers and leaders who will guide and support you through the most exciting, challenging and inspiring teacher training experience.

Training with us means that you will be immersed in a culture of high quality, evidence informed teaching practice, providing you with the opportunity to make informed choices about your own teaching practices, enabling you to grow and develop as an outstanding teacher. Furthermore, you will receive an extensive, programme of professional development that will seamlessly connect theory and practice, underpinned by a secure knowledge of what makes effective teaching. You will explore in depth the principles of cognitive science and psychology so that you can understand how students learn and consider how this translates into classroom pedagogy. Alongside this, you will receive a well-thought-out programme of SEND, wellbeing, mental health and safeguarding training, delivered by expert practitioners, providing you with a holistic approach to life as a teacher.

Training to teach with Culcheth High School offers you a unique and exciting opportunity to be awarded with a Level 7 PGCE from the University of Manchester, part of the prestigious Russel Group Universities that will fully prepare you for master’s level study if you wish to carry your level 7 credits forward. All of our partner schools have extensive teacher training experience with an excellent track record for recruitment and retention. You will be guided through a personalised mentoring and coaching programme that is built around your individual experiences and needs so that you feel prepared and excited to take on your new role as an NQT.
What do our trainees say about training at Culcheth High School?
“I can honestly say if I hadn’t come to Culcheth High School on placement 2 I don’t think I would be in teaching today. I got to see exactly how teaching should be done and learn from teachers who have mastered their profession. I learnt so much in such a short space of time due to the support and guidance of my mentor, head of humanities and the wider school. I have been given opportunities at this school that I can’t imagine I would have been given anywhere else. Culcheth is a school with a high level of professional trust and a nurturing culture that allows new teachers to thrive. I am very grateful to Culcheth High School and so relieved that my second placement school pulled out last minute!” Olivia Tyers, Head of Geography, ex-trainee at CHS.

“PGCE training at Culcheth High School was outstanding, the support I received from my Mentor as well as the humanities department was inclusive and positive. I was taught to pay attention to detail especially during marking, giving detailed feedback to help students progress. I was invited on trips to places of worship which enriched my training and understanding of safety when out of school with students. I learnt to have and expect high standards from myself as well as my students, this helped with managing behaviour and keeping student morale high in the lesson. Overall my experience at Culcheth High School was memorable and set me up for my first job as an NQT.” Rizwana Saleem, ex-trainee at CHS.
