Understanding mathematics anxiety: Research and practice

Why do so many people get anxious at the thought of doing mathematics?

Why do so many say they dislike mathematics and avoid it?

What do we actually know about maths anxiety and its causes?

Date: Friday 19th May 2017 (12pm-5pm starting with lunch)

Location: The University of Manchester (Room TBC).

(FREE attendance with refreshments and buffet lunch provided.)

You are invited to come and discuss these questions as part of our ongoing British Academy funded project at the University of Manchester, looking into what research has to tell us about mathematics anxiety. The event will bring teachers, educational psychologists and lecturers together with the research team, to help inform the project from the perspective of practice.

On the day we will share some of our findings with you in relation to the role of teaching, teachers, parents and others, and tell you what psychology, neuroscience and statistics have found. But most of the day will involve activities and discussions where you can share with us your experiences and thoughts in relation to your own practice.

The event offers a fantastic opportunity for developing your own understanding of the issues around mathematics and statistics anxiety, but also a chance to contribute to an important project, and, potentially, future policy.
